Lofoten Norway Adventure 2025
Detailed Itinerary
*While some aspects of the schedule are fixed (e.g. flights and check-in times), we will have a high degree of flexibility on the rest of the schedule based on group consensus, weather, etc. If the weather isn’t in our favor at any point, we may have unplanned downtime, but at least we will be in a beautiful setting. Of course all activities in Lofoten are optional, and you are welcome to explore on your own, read a book by the fire, or whatever you feel like doing. I will go over the next day’s schedule each night before, but feel free to ask questions anytime.
16 Jun
Arrive in Oslo, Norway. I can provide recommendations on getting there from wherever you need. Also, feel free to arrive earlier than this day to explore the city and area. I recommend you plan to arrive to the hotel no later than 1700 on 16 Jun to allow time to settle in and be ready for dinner later. If you arrive before check-in time, you can store your luggage at the hotel and take a stroll around the city center. Important: Please be sure to let me know your flight details for arrival into Oslo so that I can meet you in the city on arrival to the hotel. If you arrive early and want to say hello, I will be arriving the afternoon of 14 June. Lodging is Hotel Bondeheimen, Oslo City Center.
1500: Check in to hotel if you haven’t already.
1900: Group welcome dinner at Girotondo (reserved). Although the dinner is optional, it is a great way to meet your fellow travelers before we begin our adventure the next morning.
Some recommended activities in Oslo are:
Museums: The Fram Museum, which displays the world's strongest wooden vessel, the polar ship called Fram, and the Kon-Tiki Museum, which tells the story of Thor Heyerdahl's life's work . Also the Munch Museum. Experience the world's largest collection of Edvard Munch paintings in 13 floors!
Landmarks: Akershus Fortress, the Royal Palace, the City Hall, and the Parliament
Other attractions: Vigeland Sculpture Park, the Nobel Peace Center, the Natural History Museum, the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, and Holmenkollen Ski Museum & Tower
Neighborhoods: Grunerløkka, Oslo's trendiest neighborhood
Other places to visit: The Oslofjord, Aker Brygge, and Freia Chocolate, Frognerparken: A park with lawns, ponds, a stream, and shady trees, and much more!
17 Jun
Off to Lofoten and Henningsvær
This morning we’ll make our way early back to Oslo airport where we will board our non-stop flight for the Lofoten Islands! We’ll land in Harstad/Narvik Airport (just outside the islands), pick up our rental vehicles and drive to our first destination, Henningsvær (~2.75 hour drive) where we will check into our spectacular waterfront accommodations.
0545: Breakfast at hotel (provided). If for some reason the hotel is unable to accomodate us for breakfast before we leave (they have said they can), we’ll have time at the airport for a quick bite. In that case, you’ll also receive a $20 credit (in local currency ~200 kr) per person towards any breakfast purchase.
0610: Check out and depart hotel for airport. We’ll take the Flytoget airport express train which is about a ten minute walk from the hotel and a 25 min ride to the airport. Cost of transportation is included, and I will provide everyone tickets. It is important to be checked out and ready to depart by this time.
0633: Train departs for Oslo airport from National Theater Station
0702: Train arrives Oslo airport
0855: Flight departs Oslo for Harstad/Narvik Airport. Cost of transportation is included, and I will provide everyone tickets
1035: Land in Harstad/Narvik Airport
1100-1130: After we get our vehicles, we’ll depart Harstad/Narvik Airport for Henningsvær. We will have one large 8-passenger van and a smaller 5-passenger SUV. We’ll split the group and luggage between these two vehicles and begin our scenic journey to our first overnight stop on the islands. Drive time will likely be just under 3 hours (not including stops). We’ll stop for lunch along the way probably around 1230-1300 at Gullesfjord Kafé og Restaurant. We will likely also stop in Svolvær as there is a larger grocery store and liquor store there for provisions (e.g. breakfasts, lunches, and snacks).
1500: Arrive to Henningsvær and check into our accomodations for the next three nights. Lodging is “Lofoten Playground” Airbnb. We can grab some any additional provisions at the local grocery store, Joker.
Henningsvær is a charming and vibrant fishing village nestled amidst a dramatic island archipelago. Imagine a cluster of colorful houses perched on rugged, rocky islets, connected by red bridges. The surrounding scenery is awe-inspiring, with the peaks of the Lofoten mountains framing the crystal-clear Arctic waters.
After getting settled, you can relax, tour the village, take out one of the kayaks, relax in the sauna, or immerse yourself on our first hike of the trip! My recommendation is that we plan for a chill first arrival day as it will have already been long, but for anyone itching to get out, we can plan something like a midnight sun hike, weather depending. We may have the opportunity for a group sound bath that evening as well. More details to follow.
1900: Dinner at Tobiasbrygga Restaurant (reserved)
18 Jun
Henningsvær and Nearby Hikes
0900: Today we will stretch our legs and get in our first hike on Lofoten! For those that are interested, we’ll take on Festvågtind, one of the most highly rated and scenic trails on the islands! The trailhead is about a 10 minute drive from our lodging, and the hike offers stunning views over Henningsvær and nearby mountains and a beautiful lake on the way (cold but swimmable!). Although short, the hike is considered challenging due to the rapid ascent. Hike is 1.5 miles /2.4 km, 1637 feet / 500 meters elevation gain, 2-3 hours. It is possible to achieve great views without going all the way. So if you want to go but don’t want to climb to top, you can stop before then (the lake is a good turnaround point).
1200: Back in Henningsvær, you’ll have free time to take lunch and chill.
1430: For those that are interested, we’ll do our next hike at Djevelporten (the devil’s gate). Don’t let the name scare you though, although the trail is considered more difficult, the views are very unique and spectacular. The hike is 1.8 miles / 2.9 km, 1305 feet / 398 meter elevation gain, 2-3 hours. Again, it is possible to achieve great views without going all the way.
If the weather is not cooperating or the group fancies something different, we can drive out to Hov beach (fancy a swim?), hike Hoven (moderate, 2.3 miles / 3.7 km, 1115 feet / 340 meters, 2 hours) and/or finish with cake and coffee or even dinner at Låven on Hov. There is also horseback riding (suitable for beginners) if anyone is interested.
For anyone not interested in the other activities, feel free to take out one of the kayaks (there are three singles and one double), walk the village, relax in the sauna, or simply read a book by the fire.
1900 or earlier if you want: Due to most restaurants not accepting reservations in this village, dinner will be on our own, though we can all walk together and attempt to be seated together. Some options include Klatrekafeen (walk-ins only), one of the first restaurants, rustic and authentique and good food like burgers & bacalao, Trevarefabrikken (walk-ins only), young and trendy, lots of activities going on all the time, and the newly opened Feskarheimen that is a bit more fancy but with lovely food (you may want to reserve this if you wish to eat here). Bon appetit!
2030: Optional midnight sun hike to Tjeldbergtinden (moderate, 2.3 miles / 3.7 miles, 1066 feet / 325 meter elevation gain, 1.5-2 hours) or one of the other hikes if weather didn’t cooperate.
19 Jun
Henningsvær, Silent Trollfjord Cruise, and Optional Nearby Hikes
0615: Optional morning hike to Tjeldbergtinden (moderate, 2.3 miles / 3.7 miles, 1066 feet / 325 meter elevation gain, 1.5-2 hours)
1030: We’ll depart for for Svolvær where we’ll have time to walk around and have lunch before meeting at the pier for our silent Trollfjord Cruise!
1315: Meet at the Svolvær pier next to the Paleo Arctic Restaurant.
1330: Silent Trollfjord Cruise. The opening of Trollfjord is only 100m wide with mountains of over 1000m on the side of the fjord going straight down deep into the fjord. Once through the narrow opening, Trollfjord opens up in a cul-de-sac and you get rewarded with lush green views 360 degrees around! There is also a variety of warm lunch, sandwiches and other snacks available on the boat. Except in cases of severe weather, this activity will happen rain or shine.
1630: After the cruise, we’ll head back to our lodging.
1700: Free time to include dinner. Due to most restaurants not accepting reservations, dinner will be on our own, though we can all walk together and attempt to be seated together. Some options include Klatrekafeen (walk-ins only), one of the first restaurants, rustique and authentique and good food like burgers & bacalao, Trevarefabrikken (walk-ins only), young and trendy, lots of activities going on all the time, and the newly opened Feskarheimen that is a bit more fancy but with lovely food.
2000 (or ealier if desired): Optional midnight sun hike to Glomtinden (moderate, 2.1 miles / 3.4 km, 1000 feet / 329 meter elevation gain, ~2 hours) or Tjeldbergtinden if not already done.
20 Jun
Transition to Reine, Beach Trip with Optional Hike, Village of Å, Midnight Sun Kayak
0930: Check out from lodging. After breakfast, we will pack up and drive south towards our next breathtaking waterfront destination, Reine! Since check in isn’t until 4pm, we’ll take some scenic detours and have an optional hike along the way.
1030: We arrive in Leknes (Lofoten Bakeri) to grab a sandwich and snacks to go for anyone who wants.
1100: We arrive at Haukland Beach, considered by some to be the most beautiful beach in Norway and also the trailhead for several hikes. People not interested in hiking can chill on the beach or complete only part of a hike. For those interested in hiking, we can take either of these (or split up with a designated navigator for each):
Mannen, a magical hike from the beach to the mountain. Not many meters of altitude are required for a fabulous view. There are great views almost the entire way - not just at the finish. This moderate hike is 2.6 miles / 4 km with 1190 feet / 363 meters of elevation gain and takes about 2-2.5 hours to complete.
Uttakleiv, a moderate hike with stunning views. This one is considered more gentle as it goes around the mountain instead of to the top. It’s longer distance but easier and takes about the same amount of time. This moderate hike is 5 miles / 8 km with 718 feet / 219 meters of elevation gain and takes about 2-2.5 hours to complete.
13:30: Depart for the village of Å, the Lofoten’s southernmost village accessible by road.
1445: Arrive in Å. The village is a captivating and remarkably well-preserved traditional fishing village located at the southernmost tip of the Lofoten Islands. The road literally ends here. You’ll have time to wander on your own (but hopefully save room for some sweets from the bakery). Some things you can do while visiting the village are:
The Norwegian Fishing Village Museum (Norsk Fiskeværsmuseum). This is the primary attraction and truly makes Å a living museum. Spread across multiple historic buildings, it showcases the daily life and industry of the Lofoten fisheries from 1840 to 1960. Entrance is included in the trip for anyone who wants.
Å Bakery (Bakeriet i Å): A must-visit! This bakery, established in 1844, still uses a wood-fired oven from 1878. They are famous for their delicious cinnamon buns, often cited as the best in Lofoten. They also bake a variety of breads and pastries. Access is supposedly inside the museum.
1545: Leave for Reine.
1600: Arrive in Reine. Check into our cozy lodging (“Amaliebue Rorbu” Airbnb) and get some provisions at Coop Prix Reine. Reine is another postcard-perfect fishing village nestled amidst dramatic scenery with colorful charm. Vivid red and white rorbu, traditional fishermen's cabins, line the harbor. These colorful buildings contrast beautifully with the deep blue waters of the Reinefjord. And best of all, we are staying in one!!
1800: To accomodate those going kayaking later, we will have an earlier dinner at Tapperiet Bistro (reserved).
2000: Midnight Sun Sea Kayaking! For those partaking, we’ll make our way to the harbor in Hamnøy to start our adventure. In the event of inclement weather, this event may be cancelled (and refunded) or rescheduled to 22 June. Dress in layers for any weather condition (jacket, hat, gloves).
21 Jun
Reine, Hikes, Thrilling Boat Ride and Cave Explore
0900: Weather permitting, we’ll start the day with a morning hike to the most famous hiking trail in the Lofoten Islands, Reinebringen. The hike is considered moderate to challenging due to the elevation gain and number of stairs (almost 2000). These stairs were actually put into place by Sherpas from Nepal!! The hike is 3.6 miles /5.8 km, 1709 feet / 521 meters elevation gain, 3-4 hours. What people are saying: “Beautiful trail with stunning views! The roughly 2,000 steps are definitely a workout, but absolutely worth it for the incredible scenery at the top. There are plenty of spots along the way to take a break and enjoy the surroundings.”
1300: Return to our lodging for lunch. Can grab something from the market or head to a local restaurant. Those going on the activity should pick up something portable (e.g. a sandwich) for dinner.
1530: For those partaking, we’ll head off for our thrilling boat ride, hike, and cave exploration. Remember to bring warm, layered clothing, hiking shoes, hat and gloves, water, and portable dinner! Cameras and phones are brought at your own risk. We’ll return at approximately 2100. This activity is subject to cancellation and refund if weather is unsafe.
18:30: For those not going on the boat trip, there are dinner reservations at Underhuset (reserved for 3 people under Christopher Parker). It is a 15-20 min walk or short drive from the lodging. If you prefer to do something different for dinner, we can modify/cancel the reservation.
22 Jun
Reine, Ferry Ride, Bunes Beach and Hike, Optional Midnight Sun Hike
1000: We’ll head to the ferry port to catch the scenic ferry to Vindstad, where we will begin our easy hike to the spectular Bunes Beach. We will arrive early to make sure there are no issues with parking and to check the queues for the ferry. There is a cafe nearby for while we wait to board.
1100: Ferry departs Reine.
1120: Ferry arrives in Vindstad. From here we will begin the easy hike to Bunes Beach. The trail is easy to moderate and should take about 1 hour each way. Its 4.2 miles / 6.8 km roundtrip with 761 feet / 232 meters elevation gain. Because of the ferry schedule, we will have extra time at the beach. Recommend bringing clothes for any weather and layers, swimwear if you want to take a dip, towel for sitting on the beach, whatever you might want to chill with (book, headphones, etc.), water, lunch, snacks, hiking shoes, pack cover, maybe un umbrella if you have one just in case.
1540: Ferry departs Vindstad. Should be at ferry terminal at least 15 minutes before departure.
1605: Ferry arrives at Reine. We’ll head back to our lodging. Free time until dinner.
1930: Dinner at Gammelbua (reserved)
2130: Optional midnight sun hike to Ytresandheia-Roren. Although this hike is considered challenging due an initially steep climb, the path becomes easy and rewards with stunning views. This hike is 3.4 miles / 5.5 km with a 1164 / 355 meters elevation gain and takes about 2-2.5 hours to complete.
23 Jun

1500: Arrive in Ballstad. Check into our lodging at Hattvika Lodge (we are split between two cabins), and get any additional provisions at Joker Ballstad if needed. Ballstad is one of the largest fishing villages in Lofoten, and pulsates with the rhythm of the fishing industry. You'll likely see colorful fishing boats bobbing in the harbor and historic fishermen's cabins lining the waterfront. Once again, we will be calling two of these amazing historic cabins our home for the next two nights!
1830: Dinner at Heim (reserved)
2000: Optional midnight sun hike to Nonstinden and Ballstadheia. This moderate hike is 2.5 miles / 4 km with 1453 feet / 443 meter elevation gain and takes about 2-2.5 hours to complete.
